For those of you who are PCSing to Fort Carson I would recommend you visit this website: <a href="http://www.fort-carson.com/">Fort Carson housing office</a> because it really has a great walk-through of all the rooms in every house (virtually of course). Just a suggestion =)

I have a question. I am PFC about to pcs to Fort Carson from Korea but my wife won't pcs to there till November. Is it possible for me to get housing before she gets there to get everything settled in? Or will they just stick me in the barracks?

Thank you.

Lindsay A. asks: My hubs and I are processing to Fort Carson Co. Can any one please give me advise tips or suggestions about how the pcs works as far as moving from on post housing from here to fort Carson? I have been to Co many times but have no idea of what the base is like. Any advise I get I would greatly appreciate.n be found online at yahoo groups.

MDS says: Hi Lindsay! Thanks for writing in... here's a good place to check out local reviews on Ft. Carson: http://militarydutystations.com/installation.php?inst=Fort+Carson. Here's another MDS resource: http://www.militarydutystations-blog.com/category/conus-states/colorado/ packed full of info. One more: http://www.sargeslist.com/index.php?region=region81. Also look for on/off post rental housing at www.AHRN.com. Army Housing is also very helpful. Here's their link: https://www.facebook.com/USArmyHousing.

Ivory G. says: I wouldn't advise you to move to Choctaw Village. It looks ghetto and some people there fight in the streets and leave alot of trash laying around.

Christina D. asks: Hello My husband and I are pcs-ing to Carson the beginning of August. Was wondering if anyone could recommend which areas are the best to live in close to post since we wont be able to get into on post housing sine the wait is 9-12 months. Thanks so much any help would be greatly appreciated!

Fort Carson Rep says: They tell you the wait list is that long but you can get in pretty quickly. If you got on the list now you would almost definitely get a house you just have to stay on top and call and email at least a few times a week!

Christina D. says: I cant get on the wait-list until my husband has his official orders to Carson and hes deployed right now and doesn't know when hes getting them.

Fort Carson Rep says: Ohh that stinks :( Well we have always lived on post but from what I hear Security and Fountain are nice areas and close to post!

Christina D. says: Ok thanks! Hopefully we can get on post that would make life much easier!

Sarah S. says: If not on post then I'd recommend fountain if we werent on post thats where we'd go! We also lived in Quail Cove Apts and they seemed pretty nice and quiet and safe... dont ever hear anything abt that area on the news... fountain just always has nice big houses for rent and seems like a great place I had friends who lived there pretty sure they loved it! :)

How does the housing list work?  When you're on top and they give you a call do they give you options?  Can you be put on the list for a specific neighborhood?  If you decline one because you're waiting for a neighborhood will they put you to the bottom of the list?

Rachel A. asks: Do people live in Pueblo or is that too far from Carson? How long would the drive be every day? How many gates are there to get on post? What are the best elementary schools in the area? Thank you! :)

Linda D. says:  Pueblo is about an hour or so away and roads can get bad during the winter months.... there are Gate #43215 and 20 open to the public to get on post...

Valerie T. says: Pueblo's too far.

Gracie S. says: Pueblo is a bit too far. Fountain is a nice town. its outside gate 20 and away from all the hustle and bustle of the springs. we love living there but there isnt many apartments its mostly houses so if your looking for a house then thats a good place to look!

Rachel A. says: Thank you to those who answered. Google said the drive was about 45 mins but it only has one gate as a reference point so I thought it might actually be a shorter drive. Plus they're a little off sometimes. I guess we'll be looking in cs then! Thanks again! :)

Cristina C. says: USAFA is about 35 minutes away and they're in District 20 which is one of the best in the area but its north of Carson

Rachel A. says: Thank you Cristina! Is district 20 better in general or just that one?

Cristina C. says: There are a lot of elementary schools in District 20 and they are all pretty good. My dd goes to a special one for the arts and its all hippyish. the classrooms have no doors the grades share a communal space in between them and some classrooms have no chairs but sofas. She loves it and does very well there. My soon has special needs and attends a different one which is more traditional but receives phenomenal care. In fact EFMP at Carson specifically told me to go to District 20 bc the school at Carson and in the area where just not a good choice for my sons needs

Ashley S. says: I live in pueblo it takes my hubby about 30-35 mins to get to base and istrict 60 is good and a open district.

Valerie T. says: Traffic can be and is a nightmare. We lived just off Powers on Constitution and he spent over an hour in traffic every day.

Rachel A. says: This is all very helpful! thank you ladies! =)

Jennyfer M. says: I live out in Pueblo and it takes about 45 minutes to drive to gate 20 in fountain. We bought a house here after renting in the springs. A lot more bang for your buck out here!

Jim K. says: Great news for anyone PCSing to Colorado Springs: a new Rudy's BBQ is opening in this location.  If you don't know about Rudy's this will be their 18th location in the southwest. For those of you who've had the pleasure of being stationed in San Antonio or Albuquerque (among other places) there are Rudy's BBQs there....not only is the meat and chicken smoked to perfection but their "Creamed Corn" side is the rave of anyone who tries it! Yum...just another great reason to be in Colorado Springs!

Samantha H. asks: Hi we are moving here in May and i was looking at the pictures of different housing villages on post..Just wondering how the Pawnee village is? I've seen a few complaints how housing on base is horrible. I'm just looking for opinions. :) Thanks.

Army Wives Club of Fort Carson says: Pawnee is the most descent for lower ranking with fewer than 3 kids BUT they are usually full and the wait to get into that specific village is longer.

Samantha H. says: Thank you for your input. May I ask what's so bad with the on- post housing there?

Brooke F. says: We live on post and are pretty happy. Nothing is perfect but I have not had a bad experience since being here. We live in Apache maybe not the prettiest on the outside but we are happy with it. I also like having a carport. I think maintenance is the main reason most people have issue with post. I hear people complain about not getting thing fixed and such but every time we have had something that needed to be fixed it was done in a timely manner.

Alychia B. says: We live in Pawnee and it only took a month to get into.

Jennifer E. says: I just moved from Carson..The waiting lists are long so you would want to put your name on it AS SOON as you get orders. At Carson you have to pay for your child to go to pre K onbase (at the school) and you can pay for either half day or full day (sooo stupid) but I LOVE LOVE LOVE the daycares. They were great! My 2 year old son had just gotten out of a cast and I wasn't to potty train him but his provider completely took it upon herself to potty train him and had him going to the bathroom by himself within 7 days. They all just seemed happy to be at work and loved the kids. Summer is nice but the winter can be harsh and full of snow! It was snowing off and on from November to April while I was there. And during the summer you have a lightening storm almost everyday but they warn you on the speakers on base. There is alot to do there and it is a beautiful place!

LZH Photography says: We chose to live off post due to being told the wait list is about a year or so for my husband's rank (and we have hardly moved in the past 5 months). However I have heard once your arrive to Fort Carson go straight to the housing office to see if they have any house available that day or in the near future. Good luck trying to get through their landlines as they seem to never answer their phones.

We moved here from Fort Lewis WA and we are quite disappointed with the post here at Fort Carson. It's not as new as the one at Fort Lewis and we have found the customer service is not friendly here. They are buidling a new fitness center and commissary and so this will definitely benefit the post but Fort Carson is not our favorite.

As far as the weather goes... it's quite perfect and very dry. It hardly ever rains and the sun is very very strong.

As far as off post locations and things to do... there are plenty. If you don't mind traveling a few hours you can visit some beautiful spots.

We don't have any children and so I am not familiar with schools here. Best wishes!

Elaine B. says: Check out the Ft. Carson Family Housing page.  For off-post housing be sure to check www.ahrn.com.  Good luck!

Brittney on FB discussion wall said 06/2011: .........yle="font-family: 'lucida grande' tahoma verdana arial sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 14px;">yeah the pet fee is not reimbursed. It was $25.00 at the Comfort Inn. The La Quinta Inn does NOT charge pet fees but they were booked when we were here because of graduations and the Airforce Academy was graduating also. On post the price per day is lower than the hotels but we didn't care for the $75.00 fee either plus we have 2 kids that love to swim so we chose the Comfort Inn and we enjoyed the free breakfasts too haha. ..........yle="font-family: 'lucida grande' tahoma verdana arial sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 14px;">Well they have about 4 dog parks around here too( maybe more that we haven't found) so look up those addresses too before you come. The Bear Creek dog park is the one we have heard is the best but the other we we went to was nice also. Almost everywhere here seems to be dog friendly so its wonderful. Everybody is so friendly here and helpful too. Our GPS has been a complete lifesaver because Colorado springs is huge and can be a little overwhelming at first. Just make sure to enjoy yourselves and don't stress too much. :-)

I just made sure that whatever hotel we stayed at we asked how much it would per day then how much with military discount and then if they offer the Per Diem rate. Always ask how much it is regular before asking anything about military discounts or Per Diem cuz some hotels like to raise the price up on ya if they know you're military and just give you the per diem rate even though it could be higher than regular rate. When we called around on that weekend a bunch of hotels weren't offering the Per Diem rate for that weekend and jacked up their prices high cuz there were so many people needing reservations...............yle="font-family: 'lucida grande' tahoma verdana arial sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 14px;">We got here about 2 weeks ago and when we showed up there was no housing available on either the Carson base or the Air Force base. We were lucky and were able to find a very nice house to rent off post that our BAH covers.

yle="font-family: 'lucida grande' tahoma verdana arial sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 14px;">
My advice would be make sure you set up Temp Housing reservations before you get here and start looking now for a house/apartment to rent. Have all that info ready as soon as you get here so you can begin looking. Most places require you to have 1st months rent PLUS a deposit equal to 1st months rent before moving in. So make sure you're saving up now. It's not too stressful if you come prepared and so far this is our favorite duty station. We really do love it here!

from the Facebook discussion wall 10/2011:........... yle="font-family: 'lucida grande' tahoma verdana arial sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 14px;">We just left Carson in June and I miss it soo much.Anyone who gets stationed there is extremely lucky.Co. is amazing. It's beautiful and the weather is close to perfect.

yle="font-family: 'lucida grande' tahoma verdana arial sans-serif; font-size: 11px; line-height: 14px;">Honestlythe only thing that stunk about it was being stationed with 3BCT because they are a rapidly deploying brigademy hubby spent 39 months in Iraq in the almost 5 years we lived there=(
Everyone has thier own experiences but after almost 5 years being stationed there I must sayit was wonderful.Nothing bad ever happened to us and it's only expensive if you are from an area that is cheap like down south or someplace. We are from the East Coast and Colorado is a much cheaper place to us but againit all depends on what you are used to=)Balfour Beatty is really good about fixing things(which I miss while renting a single family home off post)there are alot of community things to do if that's your sort of thing. As far as schools goI know that the scores for FFC8 are not that great but my children(from kinder-middle school while living there)did very well with straight A's and the faculty at Abrams and Carson Middle are awesome!
Every individual will obviously have a different experience but as for our familythe experience was awesome. We miss it and can't wait to move back and buy a house out there to settle down in=)

Our favorite BBQ place was Bird Dog BBQ at Stetson Hills. We loved the sweet flavor of their sauces and they had great Sweet Tea! YUM! http://birddogbbq.com/

While Starbucks is great, we also enjoyed going to Black Bear Cafe, not to be confused with the Diner. I don?「どィび「t know if they?「どィび「re related. Black Bear Cafe has a neat tradition. If you buy one of their mugs and travel with it, you can take your picture with the mug at neat locations. Send it back in and they?「どィび「ll put it on their bulletin board. Lots of military members in interesting duty stations are posted on the board. My husband with his mug at the Crossed Sabers in Iraq is on the wall!

We were at Fort Carson for almost 3 years and really miss it. We?「どィび「re happy to be on a European adventure, but I believe we fell in love with the state and will find our way back there again someday.

Flipcam entry:

We are Active Army stationed at Fort Carson, Co in the USA. This is our first duty station and I love it and I?「どィび「m impressed. We have a beautiful view of the mountains, the weather is georgous. The installation is large, with many family oriented activites which is great for us but also has loads of single soldier activities as well. We also attend church on post and it?「どィび「s great. Fort Carson has done a great job of welcoming us to the Army and to Colorado!

Fort Carson is a pretty good post to live on.As with any installation there are pros and cons. My husband, three children and I have resided on Fort Carson since January of 2007.
Colorado is an amazing, beautiful state. It has become our home and we love it here so much that we have decided to move back and settle down here when my husband retires.
There is an abundance of things to do in Colorado Springs for everyone, especially familiies in my opinion. The restauarant selection and shopping options are fabulous. There is a strip mall or shopping plaza on what seems like every major street! There?「どィび「s an It?「どィび「s,several Chuck E. Cheeses,Mr. Biggs,IMAXX theater as well as several other movie theaters, dog parks, playgrounds, walking and hiking trails, great camping and fishing locations and The Colorado State Fair in Pueblo is awesome.
Also the local attractions like The Cliff Dwellings,Cave of the Winds,Garden of the Gods and the shops at Manitou,Seven Falls,The Cog railroad and The Royal Gorge offer a great way to get in touch with the rich heritage here.
The weather could?「どィび「nt be more perfect, you get all four seasons but without extreme weather.
There have been some good snowstorms in the 4 years that we have lived here but compared to the snow on the East Coast they are?「どィび「nt really bad,we enjoy the snow anyways.
The summer is nice and dry with little to no humidity. I do miss having more rain and clouds but this is a very sunny and dry place to live.
There are alot of heavy wind gusts here on Carson that have damaged property so being responsible on trash night is very important. Also,it can be very muddy after it rains(which isn?「どィび「t often) and after the snow melts due to the lack of grass so paws and feet can make for a huge mess during those times.
The parking in my housing area is in need of improvement, there are only two slots alloted to each quarters which can cause problems when neighbors have guests.
During the four years we have lived here I have felt very confident that my family was safe and the kids love the playgrounds that are throughout the housing areas.
Fort Carson vet clinic has a very knowledgable staff and offer good discounts on medical care and products. This is my experience with Fort Carson and Colorado Springs.I hope it is helpful.

My husband & I were stationed at Ft. Carson for a year and decided to stay in CO after he ETS?「どィび「d to finish school. Definitely check out Pikes Peak, Cave of the Winds, & Garden of the Gods- all beautiful & interesting. We love Old Colorado City, especially in the summer when they have all the festivals. The Rocky Mountain Chocolate factory is *to die for,* seriously drool-worthy. Our favorite restaurants there are Jake & Telly?「どィび「s (Greek) and then Jack Quinn?「どィび「s on Tejon (Irish pub). Pueblo is just a short drive away & home to the PBR, State Fair, and many other fun events. There is a GREAT little winery in Canyon City called Holy Cross Abbey with free wine tasting- in the fall you MUST try their Wild Canyon Harvest, it?「どィび「s my favorite wine ever.

I love Colorado Springs. I have lived here since high school. I married into the Army. We are now stationed at Fort Carson. My husband is a lower rank, so we decided to live off post, which I would recommend. There are lots of nice townhomes, apartments, and houses in the southern area that are affordable. Everybody wants to live up North where everything is, but they are building a lot down south now. Most of the apartments also give a military discounts. This is a great military town, so most places will give you a discounts with an ID card. There are lots of activites to do outdoors in the summer in the Springs. Lots of bike trails, hiking trails, parks, dog parks etc.
Cave of the Winds and going to Pikes Peak are two of the things you must do before leaving the state. Shop in Castle Rock if you don?「どィび「t mind driving. If you ski or like to snowboard, Colorado is like heaven in the winter. Winter Park and Keystone are my favorites and are just a short road trip away from Colorado Springs. Denver is about an hour away and there is lots to do there also. I love the Denver night life and the club scene.
Overall Colorado Springs is a beautiful city with crazy weather and great friendly people. I have nothing bad to say about it except that I hate black ice. :)
